The design reveal of the new PlayStation VR2 (PS VR2) is finally here, including an updated final design image of the PlayStation VR2 Sense controllers, which have been marketed previously by Sony in early January. PlayStation has ensured the design of the PS VR2 headset has a design resembling the "orb" design they went for with the PS VR2 Sense controllers, matching the whole set together. The reason behind this "orb" choice was due to Sony's envisioning of players having a 360-degree view when entering the world of virtual reality.

The design of the PS VR2 was inspired by the PlayStation 5 (PS5) so that the two could have some similarities in feel and design points of view, sort of like a PlayStation family. PlayStation has stated that the PS5 console has flat edges as it is meant to be displayed on a flat surface, while there was more emphasis on adding roundness to the design of the PS VR2 headset since it is meant to have constant human contact, similar to the rounded edges of the DualSense controller and Pulse 3D headset.

Sony has also stated the following about ensuring the headset is comfortable in terms of weight and scopes: We already had a lot of positive feedback on the ergonomics of the first PS VR headset by carefully balancing the headset weight and having a simple headband that can be adjustable, so we kept the same concept for the PS VR2 headset. Other features such as the headset’s adjustable scope that places the scope area closer or further away from the face and placement of the stereo headphone jack also remain the same, so players will be familiar with it.

The PSVR 2 has been focused on its design based on user comfort, with new features on the headset such as a lens adjustment dial, so that the eyes of a player may match based on per individual's optimal view. The weight of the headset has also been reduced compared to the previous PS VR, even with the new PS VR2 having an all-new built-in motor for haptic feedback.

Here's what Yujin Morisawa (Senior Art Director, SIE) had to say:

“When I started to work on the design for the PlayStation VR2 headset, one of the areas I wanted to focus on first was the idea of creating a vent in the headset to let air out, similar to the vents on the PS5 console that allows airflow. Our engineers came up with this idea as a good way to allow ventilation and avoid having the lens fog up while players are immersed in their VR games. I worked on many design concepts to achieve this, and in the final design, you can see there is a little space in between the top and front surface of the scope that contains the integrated ventilation. I am really proud of how this turned out and the positive feedback I have gotten so far. I hope our PlayStation fans will also agree, and I can’t wait for them to try it out.”
