After an almost two year wait, Hogwarts Legacy finally resurfaced with a 20 minute deep dive State of Play showcasing spells, classes, houses, and pretty much everything you would expect from a Harry Potter themed video game. Let’s break down everything that was covered:
**Creating a Wizard**
In Hogwarts Legacy, the first thing the player will do is create their very own Witch or Wizard. During the demo, Avalanche showcased a brief look at a robust character creation system that most interestingly includes the ability to choose a house. This, of course, includes Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, and Slytherin. Depending on which house the player chooses, they will gain access to a different common room and dormitory within Hogwarts, and be able to interact with students in their house.

**Life at Hogwarts**
It wouldn’t be a Hogwarts game without the ability to attend classes, solve puzzles, and meet students across the school. The showcase mentioned enrolling in Defence Against the Dark Arts, Charms, Herbology, and Potions classes. By learning new skills in these classes, your Witch or Wizard will be adding a variety of tools to use at their disposal to take on any enemy. In particular, the game seems to have a deep focus on acquiring ingredients to brew potions with various effects to combat. At one point, the player is also seen using a Mandrake to stun enemies which can only be learnt from the Herbology class. And of course, in Defence Against the Dark Arts, you will be learning “dozens” of different spells to use across the game.
We also received a brief look at a companion system that Avalanche is developing. Companions are other students at Hogwarts you can befriend, learn new skills from, and eventually take out on assignments with you. The system seems almost reminiscent of the Persona series, where you can optionally learn more about a particular character’s story and glean benefits that will be useful out in the world.

**Outside of Hogwarts**
Set in the late 1800s, Hogwarts Legacy will take players on a journey to unravel the mystery of a growing Goblin rebellion spearheaded by the fearsome Ranrok. To combat these forces, your Wizard or Witch will have to journey beyond Hogwarts and explore mines, catacombs, iconic locations such as Hogsmeade and more. On this journey, players will find themselves going head to head with a variety of magical creatures that have allied themselves with Ranrok’s rebellion.
We even got a brief look at some of the traversal options that players can choose to explore the world. The footage shows off the iconic broom flight that the Harry Potter franchise is known for as the player flies above some of the locales surrounding Hogwarts. Later, the player is even seen riding a Hippogriff across the countryside.
Hogwarts isn’t the only place the player can explore. Hogsmeade can be visited to obtain potion ingredients, seeds for magical plants, new gear and more. However, Hogsmeade also houses sinister dark witches and wizards capitalising on the current conflict of the world, so players will need to choose carefully whether they sneak past these enemies or tackle them head-on.

**Combat**
A slew of magical abilities was shown off during the State of Play from fan favourite spells such as Expelliarmus and Accio to even a new school of magic quoted as “Magic your professors do not understand”. During this brief clip, we saw the player summoning a lightning bolt to obliterate their enemy. This seems to imply we may see a range of magic never before seen in the Harry Potter franchise. Towards the end of the showcase, the player character was shown performing one of the unforgivable curses, Avada Kedavra, also known as the killing curse. Whilst Warner Bros. hasn’t explicitly mentioned this, it’s possible the game could give the players freedom to ally themselves with the forces of good or evil.
**Release Date**
Warner Bros. has confirmed that Hogwarts Legacy will be releasing this holiday season on both current and last-gen consoles, PC, and surprisingly the Nintendo Switch. Switch fans should bear in mind that due to how demanding the game looks, it will most likely be available via Cloud streaming.
