PlayStation Expected to Hold Massive Event This Month

Here’s everything to expect from PlayStation’s next rumoured showcase.

It’s been almost half a year since PlayStation’s last mega showcase where they finally unveiled gameplay footage of God of War: Ragnarok, provided updates on the likes of Forspoken and Ghostwire: Tokyo (and many more) and even announced brand new titles such as Marvel’s Wolverine and the sequel to Spider-Man. With the release of Gran Turismo 7 just on the horizon, Sony’s first-party release lineup for this year is starting to dry up. We know that God of War: Ragnarok is expected to release this year, but no official date confirmation has been provided yet meaning that it’s time for PlayStation to finally show us what else to expect for the rest of the year.

Rumours of a March PlayStation event have been rampant, starting with reputable insider Tom Henderson [speculating](https://twitter.com/_Tom_Henderson_/status/1496178717227466761):

“Not a scoop or anything... But surely PlayStation has to be doing *something* in March? There's too many things aligning that suggest it's probably the case.”

This, on its own, may not be anything to get too excited about, but considering insider @Shpeshal_Nick weighed in with his own insider [information](https://twitter.com/Shpeshal_Nick/status/1496372116287291392), the signs seem to be pointing to a brand new PlayStation showcase this month. He said:

“Happy to add to what’s already out there. Yes, they’ve got a show in March. This is supposed to be “the good one””

So, what might this PlayStation Showcase include? Based on predictions, rumours, and developer information let’s speculate on what Sony could show from both their first-party studios and third-party partnerships.

**God of War: Ragnarok**

Ever since its gameplay reveal in September, the team at Santa Monica Studio has been radio silent on further updates for God of War: Ragnarok. Given the latest gameplay trailer looked polished, we should expect PlayStation to finally give us a release date to this highly anticipated title. God of War: Ragnarok will be launching on both PS4 and PS5 consoles later this year.

**Final Fantasy XVI**

Final Fantasy XVI is another game in which we haven’t heard anything for almost two years now. XVI’s producer Naoki Yoshida recently published an [update](https://uk.finalfantasyxvi.com) to the game website stating that we should expect news this Spring. Given the Spring season starts on the 20th of March, if we see a PlayStation showcase towards the end of the month, it could be likely that we will finally see a new trailer to this long-awaited game. Yoshida has gone on record many times that he wishes to next showcase the game as close to release as possible, so it’s plausible that the game could release this year too.

**The Last of Us Remake and Factions 2**

Whilst there has been no official confirmation, a Bloomberg [article](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-04-09/sony-s-obsession-with-blockbusters-is-stirring-unrest-within-playstation-empire) from earlier last year revealed that a full-blown remake to The Last of Us is in development at Naughty Dog. Insider Tom Henderson followed up recently [stating](https://twitter.com/_Tom_Henderson_/status/1496497937622392833)
“According to my own sources, there are a couple of TLOU projects that are near completion and could release by the end of 2022/Early 2023. I'd expect to hear about these projects soon if they were to release this holiday period.”

The remake of course isn’t the only new piece of content we should be getting. Naughty Dog has [confirmed](https://www.naughtydog.com/blog/celebrating_the_last_of_us_day_2021) they are still working on a brand new multiplayer game set in The Last of Us universe, that is thought to be similar to the Factions mode from the original game. Given how far along these games are in development, we could see a dual release with The Last of Us HBO show currently filming.

**Hogwarts Legacy**

Avalanche Software has been hard at work expanding the Harry Potter universe with their latest game, Hogwarts Legacy. It follows a similar trend to the other titles we’ve mentioned here that released a single trailer, then went radio silent whilst fans are starved for new information. According to @AccountNGT on Twitter (The same person that leaked Star Wars: Eclipse screenshots before the official trailer), we should expect a trailer this month. He [said](https://twitter.com/accngt/status/1497547293700104196):
“Heard about new stuff today... Yes, you can 100% expect a new trailer in March”

**Twisted Metal**

After over 20 years, it seems the Twisted Metal franchise is being revived for the PlayStation 5. According to a [report](https://www.videogameschronicle.com/news/sonys-firesprite-takes-over-twisted-metal-as-motorstorm-director-is-hired/) by VGC, PlayStation has handed the franchise over to recently acquired developer Firesprite. The game’s release is set to coincide with the television show currently in production in 2023. It was previously [reported](https://www.videogameschronicle.com/news/sources-destruction-all-stars-studio-lucid-handed-twisted-metal-revival/) (VGC) that Destruction AllStars developer, Lucid Games would be working on the reboot to Twisted Metal but this could have changed due to poor reception of the former’s title.

**Forspoken**

With Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin releasing in the next couple of weeks, Square Enix will be able to launch full-scale marketing on their next big IP, Forspoken. Its latest trailer at The Game Awards revealed a May release but given the somewhat unstable gameplay footage provided by IGN (now taken down), it’s possible the game could be delayed. Either way, we should expect an update and a possible new release date at the next PlayStation Showcase as it launches as a timed console exclusive on PlayStation 5.

Aside from these games, PlayStation also has the opportunity to finally show us what their new subscription service codenamed Spartacus could look like. In another Stock Checker [article](https://stock-checker.com/articles/playstation-5-takes-best-selling-hardware-platform-in-the-us-for-january-2022-342715.html) we theorised what new additions Sony could provide to compete with Xbox Gamepass. Last month we also received our first look at the brand new [PlayStation VR2](https://stock-checker.com/articles/first-look-at-the-playstation-vr2-462604.html). With no solid release date yet, it’s possible Sony could give us an extended demo at the next PlayStation Showcase as well as provide details on its launch titles.
