Pokémon TCG Unveils Scarlet & Violet—Destined Rivals Expansion, Featuring Team Rocket's Return
The Pokémon Trading Card Game is getting a high-stakes shake-up this spring. The Pokémon Company International has announced Scarlet & Violet—Destined Rivals, the next major Scarlet & Violet series expansion, launching May 30, 2025, at retailers worldwide.
With a twist, this expansion marks the return of the fan-favourite **Trainer's Pokémon** mechanic. For the first time, players can align with either **heroic Trainer-Pokémon duos** or the infamous **Team Rocket**, blending nostalgia with fresh strategic depth.

In Destined Rivals, players can team up with iconic Trainers and their trusted Pokémon — like **Ethan & Ho-Oh ex** or **Cynthia & Garchomp ex** — representing the virtuous side of the Pokémon world. But for those who prefer chaos, Team Rocket is back with a vengeance. **Giovanni leads the charge**, bringing powerful new Team Rocket-branded cards including **Mewtwo ex** and others bent on domination.
The expansion includes:
• **83 Team Rocket-tagged cards**
• **17 Pokémon ex**, 10 of which are **Trainer's Pokémon ex**
• **23 illustration rare Pokémon**
• **11 special illustration rare Pokémon**
• **6 hyper rare gold-etched cards**
Each Trainer's Pokémon card will highlight the bond between the character and their Pokémon, complete with the Trainer's name featured on the card — a visual and tactical homage to the narrative bonds fans love.
When and Where to Play
• **May 17, 2025**: Prerelease events begin at independent retailers through the **Play! Pokémon** program.
