After months of endless speculation, it appears Sony is finally revealing their answer to Xbox Gamepass, codenamed Project Spartacus. According to a [report]( https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-03-25/sony-to-unveil-playstation-subscription-as-soon-as-next-week) by Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier:
“Sony Group Corp. is preparing to introduce a new video game subscription service for the PlayStation as early as next week, said people familiar with the plans”.
The report also mentions that Spartacus will debut “with a splashy lineup of hit games from recent years”. Whilst no specific games were mentioned, it’s plausible that Sony will expand on their current PlayStation Plus Collection library to include more recent games from the past few years. This may not be PS5 native games such as Demon’s Souls or Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, but rather titles that launched towards the tail end of the PS4’s console lifecycle e.g. The Last of Us Part II.

It also appears that PlayStation Now and PlayStation Plus will be combined and instead, customers will be able to choose from three different tiers offering different services (each tier more expensive than the last). According to another [report]( https://venturebeat.com/2022/02/24/playstation-plans-3-spartacus-tiers-for-as-much-as-16-per-month/), by Venture Beat’s Jeff Grubb, the subscription tiers are as follows:
**PS+ Essential**
This is essentially PlayStation Plus as it is today. For $10 (£6.99) per month, subscribers will be able to redeem several free games to add to their library so long as the subscription remains active.
**PS+ Extra**
For $13 a month, PS+ Extra combines the current offering of PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now into one subscription. Venture Beat reports, “This seems like Sony ripped the download catalogue out of PS Now and popped it into PS+ instead.” However, it sounds like this library of games only includes the PS4 and PS5 games currently on PlayStation Now, and nothing from generations older than these.

**PS+ Premium**
The final tier of Spartacus comes in at $16 a month and includes everything in the previous tiers as well as “classic games” and a new “games trial” feature. These classic games will likely include the PS1, PS2, and PS3 titles currently available on PlayStation Now via cloud streaming. It is currently unclear whether Sony has found a way to emulate older console hardware on the PS5 so we will have to wait and see if this cloud streaming model is continued. The games trial feature involves being able to download and play full versions of PlayStation games but is likely bound by a time limit.
Bloomberg also reports that the major disadvantage of this new service is that Sony will not be offering brand new exclusives on day 1 on the platform so don’t expect to play upcoming games like God of War: Ragnarok for no extra cost.
