After 23 months of the PS5's launch, a working jailbreak is on the loose, enabling players to install unofficial software. The news broke out via a tweet by hacker/modder [Lance McDonald](https://twitter.com/manfightdragon), previously known for releasing an unofficial patch that allowed Bloodborne to be played in 60fps on the PS4.

The jailbreak has been released by an individual known as [SpecterDev](https://twitter.com/SpecterDev). However, McDonald has published the footage of the jailbroken PS5 in action. Published footages show that a new debug menu appears within the system settings and can install a PS4 PKG file, which is a backup of a game.

As it's the first jailbreak of a PS5 console, it's currently constrained, only working on the firmware version 4.03, which was released in October 2021, replaced by version 4.50 in December 2021. According to SpecterDev, previous software versions of the console may apply the jailbreak that's been released (older than 4.03); however, newer firmware will not work for now.

They've mentioned that a player who does not have firmware version 4.03 may jailbreak their PS5, but with a 30% chance of it working, requiring multiple attempts to hack the console successfully. Once jailbroken, a player will not have access to many things expected from a jailbroken device, as it's in the early stages. At the moment, all a jailbroken PS5 may do is access read and write, but not execute. In other words, a real-life example is that the PS4 PKG installed by Lance McDonald cannot run yet.

To conclude, this is the start of the PS5's jailbroken life. Although very limited so far, hackers could use this opportunity to play around to see if they can expand into the hack and use it as a starting point for something more practical, to one day bring it to the levels of a fully jailbroken PS3/PS4. Nevertheless, this is a massive concern for Sony / PlayStation, as it's a method of bypassing PS5's security. What will happen next? Only time will tell.
